how to learn music

Barbara Dixion

Barbara grew up in a serious musical family and followed family footsteps with piano lessons and community performing from a young age. She then progressed to learning organ and keyboards.

She continued formal piano lessons for many years before pursuing her own musical directions.

At the first chance, Barbara made her way into the commercial music scene in Sydney and surrounds where she worked in many capacities on piano, keyboard, organ and later small piano accordion – over the years. She found herself working from solo to bands and also in studio productions. For some years, she worked as a musical director with a travelling children’s variety company both in Sydney and around New South Wales and interstate.

She commenced private music teaching at the time she developed her performing career. This was followed by training as a school teacher – majoring in music and with a strong emphasis on child development studies. Since then, she has worked part time in Department of Education schools for many years – as a generalist teacher and music teacher. She has continued to teach privately in piano/keyboard and theory at her own studio and also enter students for AMEB exams (piano/theory).

In the past, Barbara has entered students in Yamaha electone Festivals and been on a district judging panel and coached students who also played in bands preparing for High school. In her local area, she has been on district Festival youth rock band competition judging panels.

She has taught for other Western Sydney shop.music schools over the years such as Bava’s Music and Brashes  - and currently teaching at Bankstown Music Academy.

She has a special capacity for helping high school students with that music assignment in song analysis, music composition, or learning how to play piano to back a vocalist. She also makes theory grades more easy to learn and even INTERESTING.

She can often help the floundering teen players find their musical directions.
